The Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 2:28 p.m. for a swimmer in distress in waters off of “Spitting Caves.” Five resource units staffed with approximately 12 personnel responded. The first fire fighters arrived at the scene at 2:36 p.m. and found no swimmers were in distress. HFD and Ocean Safety were simultaneously redirected to “China Walls.” Ocean Safety reported that a female and a male swimmer were assisted from the water by bystanders. HFD arrived at China Walls to confirm the swimmers were safe and not in need of medical attention. HFD personnel concluded the incident with no reports of injuries.

The HFD urges the public to practice safe recreational beach activities and provides the
following safety tips:

  • Do not climb on wet rocks or ledges.
  • Avoid areas with moving water, waves, or rip currents.
  • Wet rocks and ledges indicate a wave has recently washed upon them.
  • Stay within your fitness and swimming abilities.
