MULTI-STRUCTURE BUILDING FIRE EXTINGUISHED IN NANAKULI

The Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 9:19 p.m. on August 21, 2021 for a building fire at 87-244 Mikana Street in Nanakuli. 13 HFD units, staffed with approximately 40 personnel, responded. The first unit arrived at the scene at 9:26 p.m. to find two one-story single-family residences fully involved with fire. HFD personnel established command, secured a water supply, and initiated an exterior defensive fire attack.

Upon arrival, the two structures were already heavily damaged and the fire was endangering other nearby homes. HFD personnel commenced with master stream firefighting operations and were able to suppress the flames and prevent further fire spread, containing the fire to the original two structures. The fire was brought under control at 10:25 p.m. and fully extinguished at 12:00 a.m. One occupant was transported to Straub for burn injuries. One fire fighter was injured while fighting the fire and was transported to Queen’s West Medical Center for medical treatment.

Seven adult occupants, five males and 2 females were able to evacuate the burning structures, however, one dog perished in the blaze. The American Red Cross was notified and will be providing services to displaced individuals.

This incident is still being investigated as to its origin and cause. Total fire damages for both homes are estimated to be $730,000 for the buildings and their contents.
