KAYAKER IN DISTRESS RESCUED FROM MOKU NUI ISLAND

The Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 5:13 p.m. for a kayaker in distress on Moku Nui Island in Kailua. Five resource units, staffed with 16 personnel, responded. The first fire fighters arrived at the scene at 5:22 p.m. HFD personnel established command, and set up a landing zone.


It was reported that the kayaker, a 23-year-old female, became ill while paddling out to Moku Nui Island with a male companion. She was unable to make the return trip back to Lanikai Beach and made the call to Fire Dispatch. Air 1 arrived on scene and picked up rescue personnel and inserted them to the kayaker’s location. The patient was packaged up and airlifted to the landing zone at Lanikai Community Park, and patient care was transferred to EMS personnel at 5:58 p.m. Her companion was able to paddle safely back to shore. HFD personnel concluded the incident with no reports of injuries.
