On Wednesday, September 22, 2021, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 5:57 a.m. about a pedestrian accident at the intersection of Ihe Street and Liliha Street. Four resource units with 14 personnel responded to the emergency.
The first fire fighters arrived at 6:02 a.m. to find an elderly female pinned under the front axle of the large commercial vehicle. A request for Rescue 1 was initiated because this collision involved a bus, in anticipation of needing heavy-duty air bags to lift the vehicle. However, the fire fighters used their battery-powered hydraulic spreaders and cutters along with jacks and wood-cribbing to raise the bus and extricate the patient. Thanks to their resourcefulness and quick action, the injured female was transferred to an awaiting Emergency Medical Services unit at 6:11 a.m. All HFD personnel were accounted for with no reports of injuries.
