On Friday, October 1, 2021, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 2:25 p.m. about a wildland fire at 1440 Sand Island Parkway in Kalihi, the location of the BMX Sandbox. Nine HFD units, staffed with approximately 28 personnel, responded to the rapidly spreading fire.

The first unit arrived at the scene at 2:37 p.m. and began fire suppression immediately then additional units joined the fire battle, including two tankers, which provided extra water supply to fight this wildland fire. Plumes of black smoke were the result of several tires burning among the dry grass. While fighting the initial wildland fire, HFD personnel also responded to two other wildland fires that broke out nearby. In total, the three separate fires burned approximately six acres.

The wildland fires were under control by 3:08 p.m. and extinguished at 4:19 p.m. There were no injuries, no homes were threatened and no evacuations necessary.
