On September 22, 2022, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at
12:13 p.m. for an injured hiker on the Luakaha Falls Trail in Nuuanu. A total of five
units, staffed with approximately 16 personnel, responded to this emergency. The first
unit arrived at the scene at 12:26 p.m. and established command. The second unit
ascended the trail on foot while a third unit established a landing zone at the Board of
Water pumping station.
It was reported that a female in her 30s fell approximately 40-50 feet from the waterfall
and was unconscious. Rescue personnel made patient contact at 12:43p.m., took over
cardiopulmonary resuscitation from bystanders and packaged the patient for an airlift
operation. Air 1, then, transported the hiker to the nearby landing zone where medical
care was transferred to Emergency Medical Services at 12:53 p.m.
All HFD personnel were accounted for with no injuries.
