On May 23, 2023, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 1:23 p.m.
about two distressed hikers on the Stairway to Heaven Trail in Kaneohe and responded
with 4 HFD units staffed with 12 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 1:30 p.m.
while another unit secured a landing zone at the Kaneohe District Park.

The 911 caller said she and her boyfriend began hiking on the Moanalua Middle Ridge
Trail and both were uninjured but unable to descend the trail due to inclement weather.
HFD’s Air 1 inserted rescue personnel into the trail where they made contact with the
hikers at 2:15 p.m. The hikers were escorted on foot and arrived at the trailhead at 4:43
p.m.

All HFD personnel were accounted for with no injuries.
