DISTRESSED HIKER RESCUED FROM KOKO HEAD CRATER TRAIL INHAWAII KAI

On October 14, 2023, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 2:09
p.m. for a distressed hiker on the Koko Head Crater Trail in Hawaii Kai and responded
with 5 units staffed with 17 personnel. The first unit arrived at 2:20 p.m. and ascended
the trail on foot to begin the ground search. Other units secured a landing zone nearby
so personnel could prepare for a search and rescue operation by air.

It was reported that a 28-year-old female was hiking since 9:30 a.m., suffered a medical
condition about half-way up the trail, and could not continue on her own. Rescuers who
were on foot arrived at her side at 2:23 p.m. They performed a medical assessment
and provided basic life support treatment while Air 1 transported and inserted a rescuer
by air. She was secured into a rescue stretcher and safely airlifted to the nearby
landing zone at 2:56 p.m. where medical care was transferred to the Emergency
Medical Services.

All HFD personnel were accounted for with no reports of injuries.
