HIKERS RESCUED ON THE KOOLAU SUMMIT TRAIL IN LAIE

On October 18, 2023, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 6:38
a.m. for hikers at the Koloa Cabin on the Koolau Summit Trail in Laie and responded
with 6 units staffed with 17 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 6:56 a.m.,
established command and secured a nearby landing zone. The second-arriving unit
prepared for air operations.

It was reported that one of two hikers at the Koloa Cabin was injured and unable to
descend the trail. Air 1 landed near the hikers’ location and rescue personnel conducted
a medical assessment, provided basic life support and loaded the first, injured hiker into
Air 1. The injured hiker was safely transported via Air 1 to the landing zone where
medical care was transferred to Emergency Medical Services at 7:38 a.m. The second
hiker was safely transported to the landing zone at 7:47 a.m.

All HFD personnel were accounted for with no injuries.
