UPDATE: The Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) resumed fire suppression operations at
7:13 a.m. to continue mitigation efforts at the wildland fire above Mililani Mauka. The fire
continues to burn in a remote, mountainous area with steep, dangerous terrain. The fire
remains at approximately 1,100 acres in size, with no significant spread overnight. The
fire is now 50% contained. The main portion of the active fire is moving in the southeast
direction, approximately four miles from the Mililani Mauka community.
There are currently two HFD helicopters, one U.S. Army National Guard Blackhawk
helicopter, one U.S. Army National Guard CH-47 Chinook aircraft, one U.S. Army
Blackhawk helicopter, one U.S. Army CH-47 Chinook aircraft and one United States Fish
and Wildlife Services (USFWS) contracted helicopter. DOFAW continues to assist with
staff and personnel. HFD Investigators and the USFWS Office of Law Enforcement are
continuing their investigation into the cause of the fire.
A contingency plan is in place if a change in the weather pattern affects fire behavior.
USFWS ground crews are scheduled to arrive from the mainland today and begin work
on Saturday in the only accessible areas closest to the Mililani Mauka community.
The State of Hawaii Department of Health’s Clean Air Branch began air quality
monitoring. Any air quality inquiries can be routed directly to the Clean Air Branch at

There are no reports of any injuries, no structures or homes have been threatened at
this time, and no evacuations have been ordered at this time.
For anyone who may be affected by the smoke, the HFD recommends they shelter in
place or a place with air conditioning. If anyone is experiencing difficulty breathing,
please call 911 immediately.
