On November 5, 2023, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 5:46
p.m. for an injured hiker on the Friendship Trail in Kaneohe and responded with 6 units
staffed with 17 personnel. The first unit arrived at 5:58 p.m. and ascended the trail on
foot to begin the ground search. Other units secured a landing zone nearby so
personnel could prepare for a search and rescue operation by air as well.
It was reported that a female in her 40’s started hiking at 3:30 p.m. with two others.
While on the trail she suffered an injury to her leg and could not continue. Air 2 arrived
at the scene, made visual contact with the hiking party, and inserted rescuers who
arrived at her side at 6:38 p.m. After rescuers performed a medical assessment and
provided basic life support treatment, Air 2 returned to land so they could be loaded
onto the aircraft and safely transported. They arrived safely at the nearby landing zone
at 6:54 p.m. where medical care was transferred to the Emergency Medical Services.
All HFD personnel were accounted for with no reports of injuries.
