On November 6, 2023, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 4:11
p.m. for a lost hiker off of the Crouching Lion Trail in Kaaawa and responded with 5
units staffed with 13 personnel. The first unit arrived at 4:34 p.m. to secure a landing
zone to prepare for a search and rescue operation by air.
It was reported that a female was hiking alone for about four hours, went off the trail,
and found herself in an area with steep terrain. Air 1 was able to make visual contact at
4:33 p.m. and inserted a rescuer who arrived at her side shortly thereafter. After
performing a medical assessment and confirming that she had no injuries, the rescuer
prepared them for an airlift extraction. Air 1 safely airlifted the hiker and rescuer to the
nearby landing zone at 5:03 p.m. where she declined medical attention. All HFD
personnel were accounted for with no injuries.
