On November 27, 2023, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 5:23
p.m. for an injured hiker on the Waiakeakua Falls Trail in Manoa and responded with
5 units staffed with 13 personnel. The first unit arrived at 5:31 p.m., established
command, and secured a landing zone to prepare for air operations..
It was reported that a male in his 30s had been hiking on the Waiakeakua Falls Trail for
approximately four hours when he fell, injuring himself. Rescue personnel were
inserted near the hiker’s location at 7:33 p.m. where a medical assessment was
conducted.
Due to a heavy tree canopy and rough terrain, rescuers packaged the hiker and
transported him by foot to a clearing where Air 1 would be able to perform an air
extraction. The hiker was safely airlifted to the nearby landing zone at 2:42 a.m. and
medical care was transferred to EMS.
All HFD personnel were also accounted for with no injuries.
