On December 9, 2023, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 10:31
a.m. for an injured hiker on the Kaau Crater Trail in Kaimuki and responded with 5 units
staffed with 13 personnel. The first unit arrived at 10:40 a.m. and secured a landing
zone nearby so personnel could prepare for a search and rescue operation by air.
It was reported that a group of three hikers were on the trail for about two and one-half
hours when a male slipped, suffered an injury, and could not continue on his
own. Air 1 inserted a rescuer who arrived at his side at 11:07 a.m. A medical
assessment was conducted and basic life support treatment was provided. He was then packaged and
airlifted safely to the nearby landing zone at 11:17 a.m. where medical care was
transferred to the Emergency Medical Services. The other two hikers in his group
safely hiked out on their own.
All HFD personnel were accounted for with no reports of injuries.
