On December 17, 2023, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 1:38
p.m. for lost hikers on the Moanalua Middle Ridge Trail in Moanalua and responded with
5 units staffed with 13 personnel. The first unit arrived at 1:51 p.m. to secure a landing
zone so personnel could prepare for a search and rescue operations by air.
It was reported that two hikers, a male in his 30’s and a female in her 20’s were hiking
for approximately four and one-half hours when they became lost. Due to weather
conditions in the area, Air 1 was unable to make it to the hiker’s location. Rescue
personnel were then inserted by Air 1 onto the trail where they made their way to the
hiker’s location on foot and made contact at 2:30 p.m. After confirming there were no
injuries, the hikers were escorted down the trail reaching the trailhead at 5:17 p.m.
All HFD personnel were accounted for with no reports of injuries.
