On January 15, 2024, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 7:03
a.m. for a building fire at Makalapa Elementary School and responded with 9 units
staffed with 34 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 7:11 a.m. to find smoke and
flames emanating from a small, single-story wooden structure.

Fire fighters secured a water supply and initiated an aggressive fire attack to bring the
fire under control at 7:31 a.m. The fire was fully extinguished at 8:35 a.m. One similar
structure, along with two steel storage containers, were also damaged. All HFD
personnel were accounted for with no reports of injuries.

The HFD Fire Investigator was requested to determine the origin and cause of the fire as
well as provide damage estimates. An update will be sent out once the final
investigation report is complete.
