On January 21, 2024, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 10:18
a.m. for an activated fire alarm at 238 Sand Island Access Road in Kalihi and responded
with one unit staffed with approximately four personnel. The first unit arrived at the
scene at 10:23 a.m. to find a strong odor of smoke emanating from a four story
commercial structure. The incident was upgraded to a building fire and five additional
units were dispatched.
Fire fighters searched the building and found that the sprinkler system had already
extinguished the fire. All searches for occupants confirmed that there was no one in the
building during the incident. Overhaul techniques were performed to look for hidden fire
in void spaces of the building to ensure the fire did not extend into other areas of the
building. All HFD personnel were accounted for with no reports of injuries.
An investigation has been initiated to determine the fire’s origin and cause and to
provide damage estimates. An update will be sent out once the final investigation report
is complete.
