HIKER RESCUED FROM THE KOLOA GULCH TRAIL

On January 21, 2024, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 1:27
p.m. for an injured hiker on the Koloa Gulch trail and responded with 5 units staffed with
13 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 1:33 p.m. and secured a landing zone at
the soccer field behind the Polynesian Cultural Center in preparation for a search and
rescue operation by air.

It was reported that a female hiker fell and suffered injuries, making it difficult to continue
hiking. Air 1 inserted a rescuer at the hiker’s location at 2:30 p.m. After conducting a
medical assessment, the rescuer notified Air 1 that the hiker declined Air 1 assistance
and wanted to descend the trail on foot. Air 1 inserted an additional rescuer to
accompany the hiking party down the trail. Rescue personnel and the hiking party safely
exited the trail at 3:30 p.m. Emergency Medical Services arrived at the trailhead and
patient care was transferred to them at 3:36 p.m.

All HFD personnel were accounted for with no injuries.
