On February 11, 2024, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 12:29
p.m. for a distressed hiker on the Lanikai Pillbox Trail in Kailua and responded with 5
units staffed with 17 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 12:41 p.m. and
ascended the trail on foot to begin the ground search. Additional units secured a
landing zone nearby in preparation for a search and rescue operation by air.
It was reported that a 60-year-old female, who had been hiking for an unknown amount
of time, became ill and could not continue on her own. Fire dispatchers were able to
obtain her geolocation with a high degree of confidence from the 911 call placed by a
third party Good Samaritan who found her on the trail. With that information, HFD personnel
on the ground located her at 12:53 p.m. and performed a medical
assessment to confirm she was not injured. Air 1 then inserted a rescuer at the
location so she could be readied for an airlift extraction. Air 1 safely airlifted her to the
nearby landing zone where she declined any further medical care at 1:10 p.m.
All HFD personnel were accounted for with no injuries.
