On February 16, 2024, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 11:44
a.m. for an unconscious hiker on the Makiki Valley Trail in Makiki and responded with 6
units staffed with 17 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 12:01 p.m.,
established command and ascended the trail on foot. A second-arriving unit secured a
nearby landing zone to prepare for air operations.
It was reported that a male in his 60s fell and was unconscious on the trail. HFD
personnel arrived at the hiker’s location at 12:20 p.m. to find bystander CPR in
progress. HFD personnel continued with basic life support while a mechanical chest
compression device was applied to ensure continuous chest compressions during the
airlift operation. The hiker was then safely transported via Air 2 to the nearby landing
zone where medical care was transferred to Emergency Medical Services at 12:45 p.m.
All HFD personnel were accounted for with no injuries
