On February 17, 2024, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 12:40
p.m. for a sick hiker on the Lanikai Pillbox Trail in Kailua and responded with 6 HFD
units staffed with 17 personnel. The first unit arrived at the trailhead at 12:54 p.m.,
established command and ascended the trail on foot. A second unit secured a nearby
landing zone to prepare for air operations.
It was reported that a male in his 80s became ill and was unable to descend the trail on
his own. HFD personnel made contact with the hiker at 1:09 p.m., conducted a medical
assessment, and provided basic life support. The hiker was then safely airlifted to the
landing zone where medical care was transferred to Emergency Medical Services at
1:21 p.m.
All HFD personnel were accounted for with no injuries.
