On February 21, 2024, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at
11:06 a.m. for hunters and their dogs near Haumama Falls in Kaneohe and responded
with 6 units staffed with 17 personnel. The first HFD unit arrived at the scene at 11:16
a.m., established command and made their way to the hunters’ location on foot. A
second unit secured a nearby landing zone to prepare for air operations.
It was reported that two male hunters in their teens were in a precarious location in the
vicinity of Haumama Falls and unable to safely descend on their own. HFD personnel
arrived at the hiker’s location at 11:49 a.m. and confirmed the two hunters were
uninjured. Air 2 then inserted rescue personnel to the hunters’ location and airlifted
them, one at a time, to the nearby landing zone where they declined medical attention.
Air 2 re-inserted rescue personnel to the same location in order to set up a rope system
to lower the four dogs to the HFD personnel who hiked in on foot. From there, the dogs
were safely escorted to the trailhead.
All HFD personnel were accounted for with no injuries.
