On February 23, 2024, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 1:35
p.m. for an injured hiker on the Maili Pillbox Trail in Maili and responded with 6 units
staffed with 15 personnel. The first HFD unit arrived at the scene, established
command and made their way to the hiker’s location on foot. A second unit secured a
nearby landing zone to prepare for air operations.
It was reported that a male in his 40s suffered an injury and was unable to return to the
trailhead on his own. HFD personnel arrived at the hiker’s location at 1:53 p.m.,
conducted a medical assessment and provided basic life support. Air 1 then inserted
rescue personnel to the hiker’s location where they prepared him for an airlift operation.
The hiker was transported via Air 1 to the landing zone and medical care was
transferred to Emergency Medical Services at 2:24 p.m.
All HFD personnel were accounted for with no injuries.
