INJURED MOTORCYCLIST RESCUED IN HELEMANO

On February 24, 2024, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 3:05
p.m. for an injured motorcyclist in the Helemano area and responded with 6 units staffed
with 14 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 3:18 p.m. to secure a landing zone
to prepare for a search and rescue operation by air.

It was reported that a group of seven motorcyclists were riding on an off-road trail for
about three hours when one of them suffered a medical condition. A person in the group
began bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation while another person called 911.
Despite the spotty cellular phone service in the remote area, HFD dispatchers
were able to secure a geolocation for HFD personnel to begin their search. Air 1
was able to locate the group and inserted a rescue person to the location. The
HFD rescue person arrived at the motorcyclist’s side at 3:37 p.m., conducted a medical
assessment, attached a mechanical chest compression device, and prepared the motorcyclist for an airlift extraction. Air 1 safely airlifted the injured motorcyclist to the landing zone
where medical care was transferred to the Federal Fire Department Medic Unit at 3:57
p.m.

All HFD personnel were accounted for with no injuries.
