HIGH-RISE APARTMENT FIRE EXTINGUISHED IN MCCULLY

On March 25, 2024, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 4:54 p.m. for a flooding situation at 2725 Kahoaloha Lane in McCully and initially responded with 1 unit staffed with 4 personnel. The single HFD unit arrived on scene at 4:55 p.m. to find water flowing from the side of the ninth floor of a twenty-four-story high-rise apartment building. After performing an initial size-up of the situation from the exterior, the Incident Commander (IC) upgraded the emergency to a building fire. The IC requested
additional resources since light smoke was emanating from the ninth-floor apartment with the exterior floor-to-ceiling glass window dislodged and precariously hanging from the building. Six additional units staffed with 22 personnel arrived on scene shortly thereafter to support the emergency incident.

Fire fighters accessed the apartment where the sprinkler head was activated and discharging water. After shutting off the water to the sprinkler head near the kitchen, smoke was seen emanating from behind the kitchen cabinets. After removing the cabinets and breaching the interior wall, a smoldering fire was discovered in between the structural members and quickly extinguished at approximately 5:45 p.m. Overhaul techniques were performed to look for hidden fires in void spaces and confirmed the fire did not extend into adjacent units of the building. HFD personnel also secured the dislodged window and cordoned off the area below it. The building’s security team was posted to ensure the area is secured overnight until repairs can be made. All residents were allowed back into the building around 7:00 p.m.

All HFD personnel were accounted for with no reports of injuries.

The HFD Fire Investigator was requested to determine the origin and cause of the fire as well as provide damage estimates. An update will be sent out once the final investigation report is complete.
