On May 4, 2024, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 2:57 p.m. for kite surfers in distress offshore of Mokuleia and responded with 4 units staffed with 13 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 3:13 p.m. to confirm information from the caller and begin the visual search from the shoreline with Ocean Safety Department lifeguards.
Air 2 arrived on scene at 3:31 p.m., with HFD rescuers onboard, to begin the visual search of the ocean area from Kaena Point to Mokuleia Beach Park. Shortly after that, Air 2 made visual contact with one of the surfers who was separated from his kite and inserted a rescuer into the ocean, assisting him safely back to the shore. The second surfer, also separated from his surfing gear, was found uninjured and walking on the shoreline. Both surfers declined medical assistance. Rescuers retrieved all surfing gear used by the two distressed surfers from the ocean, including kites.
All HFD personnel were accounted for with no reports of injuries.
