FIRST DAY OF SEARCHING FOR MISSING PERSON NEAR LANAI LOOKOUT COMPLETED

On May 4, 2024, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 8:22 a.m. to assist the Honolulu Police Department (HPD) with a search for a missing person near the Lanai Lookout in Hawaii Kai and responded with 5 units staffed with 17 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 8:30 a.m. to confirm information from the HPD officers at scene.

The action plan consisted of searches of both the ocean and land areas near the Lanai Lookout extending along the shoreline. The Ocean Safety Department lifeguards searched the ocean’s surface with jet skis while the HFD rescue unit conducted a search underwater with rescue divers. Both resources focused on a 500-yard search area while the United States Coast Guard conducted an aerial search of the ocean and shoreline beyond the focus area. A wide area search of the land included Air 1 from above and HFD personnel on foot, from the Koko Head Shooting Complex to the Halona Blow Hole Lookout. All HFD personnel were accounted for with no reports of injuries.

Search operations for the day were concluded at 4:00 p.m. The missing person was found at his residence prior to resuming the search the next morning at daybreak.
