On May 30, 2024, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 2:59 a.m. and responded to a rubbish fire at the Waianae Intermediate School with two units staffed with five personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 3:08 a.m. to find construction equipment that was parked between the cafeteria and library buildings on fire.

Fire fighters secured a water supply, initiated an offensive fire attack, and quickly brought the fire under control to ensure it was contained and did not affect any buildings. The fire was extinguished shortly thereafter.

An investigation has been initiated to determine the fire’s origin, cause, and to provide damage estimates. An update will be sent out once the final investigation report is complete.
