DIRT BIKERS RESCUED FROM MOUNTAINS ABOVE WAIAU

On June 18, 2024, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 3:49 p.m. and responded to a group of dirt bikers in distress in the mountains above Waiau with 6 units staffed with 15 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 4:05 p.m. and ascended the trail on foot. The second-arriving unit secured a nearby landing zone in preparation for air operations.

It was reported that six dirt bikers were unable to make it off of the mountain when one of their dirt bikes had mechanical issues. Due to the steep terrain, the dirt bikers were unable to return to safety. Air 1 inserted rescue personnel to the dirt bikers’ location where they conducted a medical assessment and confirmed that everyone in the party was uninjured. HFD personnel then assisted the party on foot back to the trailhead where medical attention was declined.

All HFD personnel were accounted for with no injuries.
