RESIDENTIAL BUILDING FIRE EXTINGUISHED IN WAIMANALO

On June 18, 2024, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 10:23 a.m. and responded to a building fire at 41-645 Mekia Street in Waimanalo with 9 units staffed with approximately 34 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 10:30 a.m. to find smoke and flames emanating from a small, single-story home.

Fire fighters secured a water supply, commenced an aggressive fire attack and completed a primary and secondary search to confirm no occupants were inside the structure. The fire was brought under control at 10:55 a.m. and fully extinguished at 11:26 a.m. Four dogs, one guinea pig and one tortoise were located in the home. Unfortunately, one of the dogs and the guinea pig did not make it. All HFD personnel were accounted for with no reports of injuries.

An investigation has been initiated to determine the fire’s origin and cause and to provide damage estimates. An update will be sent out once the final investigation report is complete.
