HIKER RESCUED FROM CLIFFSIDE ABOVE SUNSET BEACH ELEMENTARY

On June 22, 2024, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 7:23 a.m. and responded to a hiker in distress near the Ehukai Pillbox Trail above Sunset Beach Elementary with 4 units staffed with approximately 13 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 7:33 a.m. Two personnel ascended the trail on foot while others secured a nearby landing zone in preparation for air operations.

It was reported that a 21-year-old male was hiking alone on the Ehukai Pillbox Trail when for unknown reasons he left the trail. The hiker said he was now holding onto a tree on a cliffside, unable to go up or down. At 8:10 a.m., Air 1 located the hiker and inserted a rescue person to the location. The hiker was secured in a harness with the rescue person and both were transported to the nearby landing zone. The hiker declined an assessment by Emergency Medical Services.

All HFD personnel were accounted for with no injuries.
