HIKERS RESCUED FROM THE MANANA TRAIL IN PEARL CITY

On June 22, 2024, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 3:49 p.m. and responded to hikers in distress on the Manana Trail in Pearl City with 5 units staffed with approximately 13 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 4:05 p.m. and secured a landing zone in preparation for air operations.

It was reported that two female hikers, ages 17 and 35, were uninjured but lost. They had, reportedly, been hiking for five hours and were now under a partial canopy of trees 20 to 30 feet tall. Using a GPS hit from their cell phone, Air 1 got to the general area quickly but could not spot them because of the tree cover. The incident commander got on the phone with the hikers and was able to guide Air 1 to them. Air 1 located the hikers at 4:29 p.m. and a rescue personnel was inserted nearby. The hikers confirmed they were not injured. Rescue personnel secured the hikers with harnesses and Air 1 transported them, one at a time, with a rescue personnel to a nearby clearing. Air 1 then landed at the clearing and the hikers boarded the aircraft and were flown out to the landing zone by 5:21 p.m. Both hikers again confirmed they were uninjured and did not need the services of Emergency Medical Services.

All HFD personnel were accounted for with no injuries.
