HIKER RESCUED NEAR THE MAKAPUU LIGHTHOUSE TRAIL IN HAWAII KAI

On June 27, 2024, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 6:55 p.m. and responded to a hiker in distress at the Makapuu Tidepools in Hawaii Kai with 6 units staffed with 16 personnel. The first unit arrived at 7:00 p.m. and ascended the trail using the Rapid Response Vehicle. The second-arriving unit secured a nearby landing zone to prepare for air operations.

It was reported that one female in her teens was halfway between the Makapuu Tidepools and the Makapuu Lighthouse Trail when she suffered a panic attack and was unable to return to the trail on her own. Air 1 inserted rescue personnel to the hiker’s location at 7:26 p.m., conducted a medical assessment and confirmed she was uninjured. The hiker was, then, safely airlifted to the trail where she was escorted to the trailhead by HFD personnel and along with the remainder of her four-person hiking party.

All HFD personnel were accounted for with no injuries.
