HIKER RESCUED FROM THE RIDGELINE IN MAKAHA

On July 15, 2024, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 6:52 a.m. and responded to a hiker calling for help above Alahele Street in Makaha with 8 units staffed with 22 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 7:08 a.m. and ascended the mountainside on foot. The second-arriving unit secured a nearby landing zone in preparation for air operations.

It was reported that a male hiker in his 30s was calling out for help. Air 1 spotted the hiker along the ridgeline and inserted rescue personnel to the hiker’s location at 9:04 a.m. where they conducted a medical assessment and performed basic life support treatment. The hiker was unable to descend the ridgeline due to exhaustion and dehydration. The hiker was safely airlifted to the nearby landing zone at 9:12 a.m. where medical care was transferred to the Emergency Medical Services shortly after.

All HFD personnel were accounted for with no injuries.
