INJURED HIKER RESCUED FROM MAKIKI TRAIL IN MAKIKI

On July 21, 2024, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 9:33 a.m. and responded to an injured hiker on the Makiki Trail in Makiki with 6 units staffed with 17 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 9:42 a.m. and ascended the trail on foot to begin the ground search. Additional units secured a landing zone nearby in preparation for a search and rescue operation by air.

It was reported that a 59-year-old male was hiking with one other person, sustained an injury, and could not continue on his own. Rescuers were able to locate and arrive at his side at 10:10 a.m. A medical assessment was performed and basic life support treatment was administered. He was then secured into a rescue basket and moved to an open area for extraction. Air 1 safely airlifted him to the nearby landing zone where his medical care was transferred to the Emergency Medical Services at 10:50 a.m.
