On October 6, 2024, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 11:59 a.m. and responded to an injured hiker off of the Stairway to Hell Trail above Haiku Valley with 6 units staffed with 17 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 12:06 p.m. to secure a landing zone at nearby for a search and rescue operation by air.
It was reported that a 22-year-old female was hiking, sustained an injury and could not continue on her own. Rescuers by air were able to locate and arrive at her side at 12:40 p.m. They also performed a medical assessment and administered basic life support treatment to her injury. Air 1 was able to safely airlift her to the nearby landing zone where medical care was transferred to the Emergency Medical Services.
