On October 12, 2024, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 7:41 p.m. and responded to a boater in distress offshore of Kaupo Bay in Waimanalo with 5 units staffed with 13 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 7:53 p.m. to investigate and to set up a landing zone for a search and rescue operation by air.
It was reported that a boat lost power approximately 600 feet offshore and had become disabled. The first HFD unit at the scene sent a rescue swimmer on a rescue board to the disabled boat and confirmed that three people were onboard and uninjured. Air 1 and rescue personnel were able to safely bring two of the occupants to shore. The boat captain decided to remain on the boat. Both rescued boaters declined medical attention.
All HFD personnel were accounted for with no reports of injuries.
