On November 27, 2024, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 9:35 p.m. for an injured hiker on the Maunawili Trail in Kailua and responded with 6 units staffed with 16 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 9:50 p.m., established command, and secured a landing zone for air operations.
It was reported that a group of hikers consisting of two males and a dog began hiking to assist a female and her two dogs who were lost off of the trail. While they were looking for the female, one of the hikers became injured and was unable to descend the trail on his own. Rescue personnel made their way on foot to the hikers’ locations. Rescue personnel arrived at the injured hiker’s location at 10:15 p.m. where they conducted a medical assessment on the injured hiker. The injured hiker was safely transported to the landing zone by Air 1 and care was transferred to Emergency Medical Services at 10:45 p.m. The female hiker and two dogs were then transported to the landing zone by Air 1 at 11:16 p.m. The remaining hiker and dog were able to hike out with HFD personnel.
