On December 17, 2024, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 3:16 p.m. and responded to an aircraft fire at 3129 Ualena Street with 11 units staffed with approximately 55 personnel. The first HFD unit arrived on scene at 3:22 p.m. to find State of Hawaii Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting operators on scene battling the fire and Emergency Medical Services also nearby.
It was reported that a downed aircraft collided with the top of the abandoned, three-story structure before impacting the ground. The HFD assumed Command, assisted fire control efforts and conducted a primary search to ensure no occupants were inside the structure and to check for any fire extension. The fire was declared under control and extinguished at 3:57 p.m. Sadly, the two souls onboard the aircraft passed away.
An investigation has been initiated to determine the fire’s origin and cause as well as to provide damage estimates. The HFD Fire Investigators are working alongside the Federal Aviation Administration, the Department of Transportation, the National Transportation Safety Board, and the State Sheriff Division.
