On February 9, 2025, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 1:13 p.m. and responded to injured hikers off of the Sacred Falls Trail in Punaluu with 6 units staffed with 17 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 1:37 p.m. to begin the search by ground. Other units secured a landing zone nearby to prepare for a search and rescue operation by air.
It was reported that a husband and wife visiting from California, both in their 60’s, were hiking for about 15 minutes on the trail, sustained multiple injuries, and could not continue on their own. Rescuers located them and arrived at their side at 2:08 p.m. They performed a medical assessment, administered basic life support treatment, and prepared them for extracton. Air 1 arrived then safely airlifted the couple to the landing zone where their medical care was transferred to the Emergency Medical Services at 2:30 p.m.
