On April 24, 2025, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 10:54 a.m. and responded to a missing hiker off of the Makapuꞌu Lighthouse Trail in Hawaiꞌi Kai with 6 units staffed with 17 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 11:03 a.m., established command and ascended the trail on foot. The second-arriving company secured a nearby landing zone to prepare for air operations.
It was reported that a male hiker in his 80s ventured off the trail and his location was unknown. HFD personnel conducted a ground search and located the hiker who was pulseless, apneic and unresponsive. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation was initiated while a mechanical chest compression device was applied to ensure continuous chest compressions during the airlift operation. The hiker was then safely transported via Air 1 to the landing zone where medical care was transferred to Emergency Medical Services at 1:10 p.m.
