On May 28, 2025, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 8:48 p.m. and responded to a building fire at 1545 Kalakaua Avenue in Pawaa with 10 units staffed with 39 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 8:51 p.m. to find a working fire on the 9th floor of Kalakaua Homes.

Fire fighters secured a water supply and commenced an aggressive fire attack. Two residents on the 9th floor were assisted to a safe area by HFD personnel. Medical care was then transferred to Emergency Medical Services at 9:12 p.m. A search of the structure was completed and confirmed no occupants were inside the involved unit. HFD crews investigated for fire extension in adjacent units. The fire was declared under control at 9:05 p.m. and extinguished at 9:22 p.m.
