On May 28, 2025, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 8:00 p.m. for a missing hiker on the Maili Pillbox Trail and responded with 6 units staffed with 17 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 8:07 p.m. Command was established and HFD personnel ascended the trail on foot to search for the missing hiker. A second unit secured a landing zone nearby to prepare for air operations.
Air 1 inserted rescue personnel to also search for the hiker. HFD personnel on foot arrived at the hiker’s location, packaged the victim then transported him off the trail where care was transferred to the Emergency Medical Services at 1:30 a.m. on May 29, 2025.
