On June 9, 2025, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 10:26 a.m. and responded to hikers in distress off of the Kaꞌau Crater Trail in Palolo with 6 units staffed with 17 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 10:37 a.m., established command and ascended the trail on foot.
It was reported that two male and two female hikers in their 20s were stuck in a precarious location and unable to safely descend. Air 1 inserted rescue personnel to the hikers’ location and conducted a medical assessment to confirm they were uninjured. All four hikers were safely airlifted, one at a time, to the nearby landing zone where medical care was refused.
