On June 22, 2025, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 2:30 p.m. and responded to hikers who were in distress on the Olomana Ridge Trail in Kailua with 4 units staffed with 12 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 2:40 p.m. and secured a landing zone nearby to prepare for a search and rescue operation by air.
It was reported that a male and female in their 20’s were both hiking for about four and one-half hours on the trail, sustained muscle cramps, and could not continue on their own. Rescuers were able to locate them and arrive at their side at 3:18 p.m. They performed a medical assessment to confirm there were no injuries and prepared them for extracton. Air 3 arrived and safely airlifted them individually to the nearby landing zone where their medical care was transferred to the Emergency Medical Services at 3:39 p.m.
