On July 4, 2025, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 4:49 p.m. and responded to an injured hiker on the Wiliwilinui Ridge Trail in Wailupe with 5 units staffed with 13 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 5:11 p.m. A landing zone was secured at the head of the trail to prepare for a search and rescue operation by air.
It was reported that a 20-year-old male was hiking and injured his lower leg, and could not continue on his own. Rescuers were able to locate him and arrived at his side at 5:42 p.m. They performed a medical assessment, administered basic life support treatment, and prepared him for extraction. Air 1 arrived and safely transported him to the nearby landing zone where medical care was transferred to the Emergency Medical Services at 6:06 p.m.
All HFD personnel were accounted for with no injuries.
