INJURED HIKER RESCUED FROM BUNKER ON THE KOKO HEAD CRATER TRAIL IN HAWAII KAI

On July 5, 2025, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 5:24 p.m. and responded to an injured hiker on the Koko Head Trail in Hawaii Kai with 5 units staffed with 13 personnel. While units were still enroute, the responding Chief Officer gathered more information and requested additional resources since the caller described the hiker being in a confined space. The first unit arrived on scene at 5:39 p.m. and ascended the trail on foot while other units secured a landing zone nearby to prepare for a search and rescue operation by air.

It was reported that an 8-year-old boy was hiking with his parents and fell approximately 20 feet down a shaft that led to a bunker-like room located near the top of the trail. Rescuers were able to locate them and arrive at his side to extricate him from the space at 5:57 p.m. They performed a medical assessment, provided basic life support treatment, and prepared him for extraction. Air 1 arrived and safely airlifted him to the nearby landing zone, where medical care was transferred to the Emergency Medical Services at 6:10 p.m.
