UPDATE: The Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) Investigator has classified the cause of the wildland fire that occurred on July 6, 2025, in Māʻili as undetermined.
The classification follows a comprehensive investigation in which the HFD Investigator examined the area of origin, collected and analyzed physical evidence, interviewed witnesses, and reviewed weather conditions, environmental factors, and all potential ignition sources. Despite these efforts, no definitive cause could be determined based on the available evidence.
The fire’s area of origin was identified near Paʻakea Road, in the vicinity of the Lualualei Very Low Frequency (VLF) Transmitter. This determination was made using fire pattern analysis, video footage, and witness accounts.
The case remains open pending any new evidence. The damage assessment is still in progress, and further details will be released upon its completion.
