UPDATE: This morning, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) resumed fire fighting operations in Kunia alongside state partners. A total of five air assets from the HFD and the Department of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) focused water drops on the mauka side of the fire while ground units from the HFD and DOFAW addressed hot spots near the base of the mountain. Fire fighting operations via air were suspended at sundown due to impending darkness, while ground units worked until approximately 8:00 p.m.
The fire was reported as 75% contained as of 9:00 p.m.
No injuries were reported, no structures were impacted, and all HFD personnel were accounted for. An HFD unit will remain on fire watch throughout the evening.
Late last night, for the first time, the HFD’s Drone 1 was able to fly directly over the mountain area of the fire in nearly smokeless conditions. This allowed for a more accurate mapping of the impacted area, which has now been measured at approximately 250 acres. The initial estimate of 600 acres was based on a rapid map calculation of the general area and not a detailed outline of the fire perimeter.
The investigation to determine the fire’s origin and cause and to provide damage estimates is still ongoing. An update will be sent out once the final investigation report is complete.
