DISABLED VESSEL WITH BOATERS RESCUED OFFSHORE OF LAIE POINT

On August 31, 2025, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 4:44 p.m. for a boater in distress offshore of the Laie Point area and responded with 4 units with 12 personnel. The first unit arrived on scene at 4:56 p.m. to investigate and spot the disabled vessel.

The caller, who was one of three souls aboard the 18-foot vessel, reported that they lost engine power and were about one-half mile offshore of Laie Point. They tried to anchor the vessel to prevent becoming grounded on the reef, but were unsuccessful and adrift in the ocean. Fortunately, Ocean Safety Department’s (OSD) rescue jetski team arrived at the vessel’s side at 5:10 p.m. to ensure the disabled vessel did not run aground on the reef while towing it slowly towards the Kahana Bay Boat Ramp. The HFD’s Rescue 2 boat arrived at the vessel’s side at 6:00 p.m., relieved the OSD from towing the vessel, and brought the disabled vessel safely to the Kahana Bay Boat Ramp at 6:59 p.m.
